What To Do And What Not To Do If You’re Locked Out Of Your Home

What To Do And What Not To Do If You’re Locked Out Of Your Home

It’s happened to most of us. We’ve lost the key, or left a key in the house, only to find that we’re standing outside our own homes, and can’t get in. You may start to panic, and think of ways to get in, but there are some things that you absolutely should not do, and some things that you absolutely should.

What Not To Do When Locked Out

You might think that breaking a window is a good idea, and while it will get you immediate access to the house, it really isn’t a good idea at all. All it means is that you’ll need to organise a window fitter to replace the glass. Also if you do break a window, and still can’t find a key, you’ll need to call a locksmith to cut new keys, or replace the locks. And you are also left vulnerable until you mange to have your glass refitted.
Some people try to take ideas from movies. In movies, people are always breaking into houses using nothing but a credit card. This isn’t a good idea. It’s highly unlikely to actually work, and it will probably break your card. The same goes for hair pins. People who have training and practice may be able to open locks using these common items, but you probably won’t be able to.
Another great movie idea is to scale the drainpipes. This is an extremely bad idea, and is much more likely to result in you still being unable to get into your house, and needing a trip to the emergency department of your local hospital.
Some people might be able to gain entry back into their homes by removing the door handle. It might work, but if you have an extra security locks, then you’re still going to be locked out of your house.

What To Do When Locked Out

Realistically, despite the multitude of web pages available that will tell you how to get into your house in three easy steps, it’s not that simple. The best, and possibly the only, way to get back into your locked home safely is to call a locksmith. A trained locksmith will be able to get you into your home, without causing unnecessary damage to your windows, locks or doors. The locksmith will also be able to replace the locks, or make you a copy of your key. When you’re looking for a locksmith to help you, you should look for a 24 hour locksmith, as they will be able to help you at any time of the day or night.
If you want to avoid being locked out of your house, you should consider giving a friend, or trusted neighbour a copy of your keys. If you can’t do that, you can look for a key holder than can keep a spare key. Look for one that looks realistic, and place it somewhere where it is unlikely to be found by a potential burglar.
